Basilio Fernández was born in Valverdin, in the mountains north of León, in 1909. Before the Spanish Civil War, he befriended the vanguardist poet Gerado Diego and published poems in the literary supplement to the Italian newspaper Il Mare (at which Ezra Pound was a contributing editor). After the civil war, Fernández ceased to publish poetry. Fernández died in 1987. His unpublished works were collected and published in 1991. The collection won Spain's Nation Poetry Prize that year.
