Marijane Osborn

After living for many years near Bentham on the edge of the Dales, where her favorite recreation was fell walking and caving, Marijane Osborn was awarded a fellowship at Edinburgh University and then became a professor at the University of California at Davis, a rewarding job but sadly too far away from mountains. Her wonderful students and friends make up for that lack. Retired now, she continues to write books and articles on northern subjects, and sometimes poems, with an article on Robert Louis Stevenson appearing soon in The Scottish Literary Journal. The poem ‘Kindness’ was inspired by a friend in Sweden who broke his attic window for wintertime bats, but the poem’s ruined cottage is up on the fells near Bentham. ‘The Naked Spelunker’ was inspired by an untitled painting by the Icelandic artist Kristin Arngrimsdottir.

Marijane Osborn's work featured in Stand Magazine comprises two contributions of poetry, over a period of 10 years.
