Mark Swift is South African born and his first volume of poems, Treading Water, won the Ingrid Jonker Prize for the best debut volume in Southern Africa. In 1987 he was awarded the Thomas Pringle Prize by the English Academy of Southern Africa. A fourth volume, Testing the Edge, was published in 1996.
